Currently, how do you assess your students on science curriculum?

  1. We follow our science curriculum map, and students are informally assessed on the science related activities throughout the unit. We do not formally assess first grade students in science.

  2. In addition, science is only listed as an effort grade on our report card, sent home only three times a year.

  3. As a high school science teacher, my primary methods of assessment are written tests, quizzes and lab reports.

  4. As far as assessing students in science in 5th grade, we have a district mid-term and final test according to our curriculum. This was created by a committee of grade 5 teachers. Both of these assessments require a lab component. The rest of the assessments are quizzes and other lab/hands on experiments.

  5. What kind of performance tasks do you use for the lab component?

  6. For science, we assess students using vocabulary quizzes, chapter tests, short answer questions, and writing assignments. We also incorporate experiments when time allows us. At the elementary level, there is limited time for Social Studies and Science, so we try to incorporate these subjects through ELA.

  7. In Science, students are assessed by quizzes, tests, assignments collected after a lesson and homework. Everyday the kids have hands on lessons and experiments which allow instant clarification as to if the kids are understanding the topic. Questions are then added for higher level clarification of the topic. The student's are also highly encouraged to participate throughout the class.

  9. Traditionally in the elementary schools, I have seen a mix of summative written exams, quizzes, and sometimes lab exercises along with projects. Most of them being written summative tests.
